What is IP Address?

IP Address or “Internet Protocol Address” is a logical numeric address, which looks something like 181.111.54.152. 

This IP address is specially assigned to internet use devices like computers, smartphones, tablets, printers, routers, and switches. This IP address is given separately to all the devices. 

So that they can have an identity in the IP network and can communicate with each other.

An IP address is a network address for your computer or smartphone, which enables the Internet to send you email or data. 

For example, a courier reaches you through your home address. In the same way, you can get data on your device through an internet address. 

Whatever IP address your device is currently using, it is your “Digital Address”.  The digits of an IP address are divided into two parts.  

1) Network part

2) Host

The first part tells who this address belongs to and the second part gives information about the exact location of that address. For example, whenever you try to open a website like www.mahalpur.com on the internet, the computer sends the name of that website to the DNS server. 

From where it gets the IP address of the domain name.  Any network that is connected to the Internet cannot function without an IP address.

IP Address Versions 

The two main IP versions are given below.

IPv4 (Internet Protocol Version 4)

IPv6.(Internet Protocol Version 6)

IPv4 

The first version of IP was IPv4, which was deployed for ARPANET production in 1983.  In this, the network is identified using the addressing system.  This version was created by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) and published in RFC 791.  It is used in the pocket switched link layer in the OSI model.

IPv4 uses a 32-bit address scheme in five classes (Class A to Class E) for Ethernet communication.  It is a numerical address and its binary bits are separated by a dot(.).  The number of each of its groups can range from 0 to 255.  Example – 12.244.233.165.

There are three types of addresses in this, unicast, broadcast, and multicast.  It supports VLSML (virtual length subnet mask). 

About 4,294,967,296 addresses can be stored in this version of the Internet protocol address.  Which is more than 4 billion.  But today with the growth of the Internet, this situation has come, and this number has been filled. 

We do not have any more numbers to store the new IP address.  Its solution has also been found.  The IP addresses next to it will be stored in the IPv6 version.  Let’s see what’s new in this.

IPv6 

To meet the shortage of more internet addresses, a new internet addressing system (IPv6) is being deployed. 

This version is also called the internet protocol next generation (IPng).  IETF started in 1994.  It is a network layer protocol, which enables data communication over packet-switched networks.  Packet Switching involves sending and receiving data between two nodes in the network.  

The addresses of IPv6 are written in hexadecimal.  Its main advantage is the increase in address space.  The length of its addresses is 128 bits and they are separated by colons (:).  About 340 undecillion.

IPv4 features

This allows us to store 4 billion IP addresses.

IPv6 features

IPv6 is a 128 bit IP address.

It is an alphanumeric address, whose binary bits are separated by a colon (:).  It also includes hexadecimal.

The number of its header field is 8 and the length of the header files is 40.

There are three types of IP address unicast, multicast and anycast.

Provides Class D and Class E.

It provides a facility to store the IP address in unlimited numbers.

Due to its huge address space, it gives the facility of direct addressing.

Configuration is optional, depending on the required functions.

About 340 undecillion IP addresses can be stored in this, which is a lot.

Types of IP Address

There are mainly two types of IP addresses, 

1) Public IP Address

The address given by your ISP (Internet Service Provider) to the router, modem in your home, or business area is called Public IP Address. 

Public IP addresses are given to all the devices which are directly connected to the public internet.  In simple words, the Public IP address is the address that is assigned to a computing device to allow direct access to the Internet.  Every device that is accessing the Internet uses a unique IP address.

Most of the public IP addresses keep changing.  These are called dynamic IP addresses.  Although host websites are given static IP addresses, which never change so that the user can have continuous access to their server.

2) Private IP Address

The IP addresses that are used to assign computers within a private location, without being exposed to the Internet, are called private IP addresses.  For example, there are many computers in your house, now you use a router to use the internet in all of them. 

In this situation, your router gets a public IP address and each device connected to it is given a private IP address by your router through the DHCP protocol.

3) Dynamic or Static IP Address

IP addresses can be either static or dynamic. Static IP addresses never change. They serve as a permanent Internet address and provide a simple and reliable way for remote computers to contact you. 

Static IP addresses reveal information such as the continent, country, region, and city a computer is located in;  ISP (Internet Service Provider) that provides services for a particular computer;  and technical information such as the exact latitude and longitude of the computer’s country, as well as local technology.

Many websites offer free IP address lookup services to their visitors.  If you’re curious about your IP address, you can do a Google search of these websites.

Dynamic IP addresses are temporary and are assigned each time a computer joins a network (by DHCP).  They, in effect, borrow from a pool of IP addresses that are shared between different computers. 

Since there are a limited number of available IP addresses, many ISPs reserve a portion of their assigned addresses to be shared among their customers in this way.  This reduces costs and allows them to serve more subscribers than they otherwise could.

Static IP addresses are generally better suited for such uses as VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol), online gaming, or for any other purpose where users need to be able to easily locate and connect to other computers. 

Easier access can also be facilitated when using a dynamic IP address through the use of a dynamic DNS service, enabling you to find other computers even if you use a temporary, one-time IP address.  are doing  This often entails an additional fee, however, so check with your ISP.

Static IP addresses are considered somewhat less secure than dynamic IP addresses, as they are easier to track for data mining purposes.
